After returning from a successful year as a Fulbright-DDRA fellow in Sri Lanka, Jim Sykes is chipping away at his dissertation, called “The Music of the Gift: Sound, Sovereignty, and Multicultural History in Sri Lanka”. Jim was honored to speak about this research recently at the “Sound Works” conference organized by professors Philip Bohlman and Kaley Mason.
Jim has also been busy as a performer, touring with the guitarist Marnie Stern (one of the “top twenty female guitarists of all time” – Venus Magazine). Their concert at New York’s CMJ festival was covered by the New York Times and voted one of the top ten concerts of the year by the popular Stereogum website (a list that included such venerable acts as Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, and Portishead). Jim is working on a number of CD projects, including one with Mark Shippy, guitarist for Chicago’s legendary outsider rock band U.S. Maple.
