Robert Carl’s Simic Songs a set of four-voice madrigals on poems of Charles Simic (former US Poet Laureate), was premiered at Wesleyan University on September 14, 2008, with the poet in attendance and reading the texts. Robert’s Symphony No. 4, “The Ladder” was premiered on February 20, 2009 at the Hartt School, University of Hartford. For those who wish to hear it, there is an essay and sound file available on the “Postclassic” blog of Kyle Gann at artsjournal.com.
Robert Carl’s book Terry Riley’s In C has been published by Oxford University Press. It’s a groundbreaking study of one of the classic minimalist works, viewed from a variety of perspectives: musicological, analytic, aesthetic. Robert’s post on the OUP blog is now available.
