  • DOVA Temporary is pleased to present a video installation by Eleni Chappen. Cat Video is a looping still-frame projection of a golden cat statue (also called the “beckoning cat”) waving its hand endlessly. It will occupy the storefront window of the gallery in the former Harper Court area of East 53rd Street, an area currently undergoing a drastic facelift due to extensive construction.

Cat Video points to instances of repetition found in various cultural practices: religious, political, and social, as well as the notion of repetition as pure pathology. It playfully invokes the aesthetics of patriotism, militarism, sporting events, concerts, and other occasions of collective effervescence. In the vein of certain contemporary artists, like Bruce Nauman and Paul Pfeiffer, the work questions what it means to extract human actions from their cultural contexts, and repeat them to the point of absurdity.

Eleni Chappen graduated from the University of Chicago in 2010 with a B.A. in Visual Arts. She lives and works in Chicago.
