I’ve long been interested in crossover projects between computing and the humanities, and have taught a variety of courses related to themes of “computer programming as a liberal art.” I’m currently working on a monograph on Aristotle’s Poetics as a productive science that may someday have implications for thinking about artifactual design. Brenda Laurel’s Computers as Theater would be in a related domain space.

I am interested in digital libraries, with special emphasis on metadata issues (creation, standardization, access, semantics, usability); use and users of digital resources; digital collection management and development; and digital project management. Like others in my field, I believe the digital humanities offer scholars at the junior-faculty level many opportunities to do innovative, original research and break from the typically restrictive route to tenure in ways possibly transcending the intellectual gains of the scholarly monograph.

I am interested in Computational Linguistics / Natural Language Processing. The focus on my research is on meaning and I attempt to understand the role of semantics and pragmatics in supporting intelligent inference and use this understanding to develop systems that learn and make intelligent inferences in complex domains.
The target areas of application have been Information Extraction and Retrieval, Question Answering, Text Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Machine Translation. More recently I added Language Evolution, Computer Vision, and Bioinformatics.
