CFP: 14th Annual Czech Studies Workshop

at Columbia University in the City of New York

Proposal Deadline: January 11, 2013

The Fourteenth Annual Czech Studies Workshop, which will be held at Columbia University in the City of New York on April 26-27, 2013, welcomes proposals for papers on Czech topics, broadly defined, in all disciplines. Slovak topics will also be considered.

In the past, our interdisciplinary conference has drawn participants from colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. Areas of interest have included:
anthropology, architecture, art, economics, education, film, geography, history, Jewish studies, literature, music, philosophy, politics, religion, and theater. Work in progress is appropriate for our workshop format. Junior faculty and advanced graduate students are especially encouraged to participate. Continue reading →

CFP: “Change and Continuity in the Middle East and Central Asia”

The Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (Middle East and Central Asia) is convening a postgraduate conference titled ‘Change and Continuity in the Middle East and Central Asia’ on the 30th of November and 1st of December 2012 for local and international graduate students and early career researchers based in Australia and internationally.
The two day interdisciplinary conference will offer an opportunity for emerging scholars to present new ideas and analysis on the region and potentially to have their work published in peer reviewed outlets.

We invite exceptional Masters by research students, PhD scholars, Postdoctoral fellows and early career academics to submit a short conference abstract (of no more than 300 words) by 17 August 2012 for consideration by the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies. Paper proposals should be within the disciplines of Political Science, International Relations, or Anthropology and Sociology, and relate to one or more of the following themes:
• Political Islam
• Peace and Conflict
• State Building
• Social Movements
• Gender
• Political Economy
• Revolutionary Change in the Arab World
• Nationalism and Identity

All participants whose abstracts have been accepted will be invited to present at the conference in person. Discussions will be encouraged, and presenters will be able to get feedback from their peers as well as academics in attendance on their work.

Presenters seeking to be considered for the conference publication, must submit their complete papers by 19 October 2012. These papers will be submitted for anonymous peer review by prominent academics in the field in line with HERDC guidelines. After the conference, a selection of the best papers will be published in an edited volume.

Timberlake Memorial Graduate Paper Prize

Timberlake Memorial Graduate Paper Prize (to be handed out in conjunction with the Central Slavic Conference 2012)
Graduate students who present at the CSC Annual Meeting are invited to
participate in the Charles Timberlake Graduate Paper Prize competition.
Dedicated to the memory of Professor Timberlake as teacher and mentor, the
prize carries a cash award. Submissions should be sent electronically to

Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute

The Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA) and the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are proud to announce the second annual Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute, CESSI, to be held at UW-Madison from June 18-August 10, 2012.

In summer 2012, CESSI will offer intensive courses in beginning and intermediate Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek. With sufficient enrollment, other Central Eurasian Turkic languages could also be offered. Please contact the CESSI program coordinator if you are interested in a language not listed above. Scheduling of all courses is contingent upon enrollment. Please apply to CESSI as early as possible to help ensure that your class will be offered.

CESSI 2012 will also feature lectures (in English) on Central Eurasian history and culture and a rich program of cultural events and field trips related to the countries of Central Eurasia. Information and application materials are available on the CESSI Web site:

The deadline for admission and the fee remission grant is April 16, 2012. The application deadline for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships at UW-Madison is February 15, 2012. More information about UW-Madison FLAS fellowships is available at:

Call for papers for the 2012 AATSEEL-WI Conference

Proposal Deadline August 31, 2012

Abstracts for 20-minute papers on any aspect of Slavic literatures
and cultures (including film, music, the visual arts, linguistics, and language
pedagogy) are invited for the annual conference of the Wisconsin chapter
of AATSEEL (The American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European
Languages). Comparative topics and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome.
