Artists Inhabit the Museum

Kris Ercums, Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas

Moving beyond the material art object, this presentation will consider the circulation of creative specialists as fundamental to constructing of art ecologies in today’s globalized contemporary art world. Two prominent examples of the flow of creative production can be observed in artist-in-residence projects and curatorial fieldwork. The presentation will briefly introduce artist-in-residence projects at the Spencer Museum of Art by East Asian artists Jin Shan, Kim Jongku, and the Xijing Men (Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Gimhongsok, Chen Shaoxiong) as a way of discussing the importance of artistic research in the university art museum. The presentation will then introduce four new site-specific works created in residence by Rohini Devasher (New Delhi), Sahej Rahal (Mumbai), Konoike Tomoko (Tokyo), and Park Jaeyoung (Seoul) for Temporal Turn: Art and Speculation in Contemporary Asia, a major international exhibition that will open on November 10, 2016.
