A $115 million investment from the Department of Energy could bring uranium enrichment back to Piketon.

For decades, the federal government enriched uranium in a sprawling facility along the banks of the Scioto River, but the last programs there were disbanded by the Obama administration in 2015.

On Monday, Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) said 16 centrifuges would be installed at the former American Centrifuge Project in Piketon to demonstrate the production of uranium fuel source for advanced nuclear reactors.

“Having domestic enrichment capabilities would provide stability and security to our country,” Portman’s office said in the statement. “I want to thank the Department of Energy and the Trump administration for reconsidering the Obama administration’s decision to end the domestic uranium enrichment demonstration program.”
