Locals baffled as elk rescued from RADIOACTIVE Chernobyl water after three days via Daily Star

AN elk is expected to survive after it was saved from a radioactive water tank at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant during a tense mission.

The animal, which is part of the deer family, spent three days swimming around trying to survive.

It was eventually spotted by a group during a guided tour at the plant in northern Ukraine.

But the high concrete walls made it impossible for the scared elk to make it out of the reservoir.

Video footage has now been released by the police showing a tense rescue operation performed by firefighters using a small boat.

One of the men can be seen holding a rope tethered to the antlers of the elk, as they slowly make their way out.

The firefighter then holds the animal’s head above the water so it can breath while being towed to the bank.
