Delegates clash over nuclear ban treaty via NHK World

Delegates to a preparatory meeting for the 2020 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference have clashed over a UN nuclear ban treaty adopted last year.

The 10-day meeting kicked off at the United Nations’ European headquarters in Geneva on Monday.

One item on the agenda is the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The treaty was backed mainly by UN member nations that do not possess nuclear arms.

Nuclear powers and countries protected by the nuclear umbrella, such as Japan, opposed the pact on security grounds.

At the meeting, a US delegate suggested that banning nuclear weapons is not realistic in the face of threats from Russia and North Korea, and stressed the need to assess the global security situation.

A delegate from Austria, which backs the ban treaty, argued that as long as there are countries that justify nuclear arms for security reasons, other nations will embark on nuclear development.
