Here’s what people are saying:

Nevada is not a wasteland

“If anybody’s listening: We’re not giving up. I’m as committed today as I was 20 years ago. (Yucca) is a defective project that we know shouldn’t proceed and is, frankly, a waste of taxpayer money.”

—Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval

“What we do know is that the local communities would be the ones forced to suffer any type of long-term effects of radiation exposure. This is in a state that was home to our nation’s nuclear test site, and the surrounding communities have suffered for years from resulting exposure. I ask this committee, should Nevadans be forced once more to shoulder this burden?”

“Keep fighting against this. We have no nuclear power plants here so why should everyone else toss their garbage on us and ruin our beautiful desert environment.”

—Patty P., Facebook

We should negotiate for better deal

“What if a permanent investment were made in Nevada schools — the kind of investment that could take us from the bottom 10 percent to the top 10 percent?

“What if Nevada were to receive a larger share of water rights from the Colorado River, or obtain greater leverage in our quest for better transportation and infrastructure funding across the state?”

—Former U.S. Rep. Cresent Hardy (R-Nevada), opinion column in Las Vegas Review-Journal

“Just don’t give it away for nothing. A billion a year for schools and infrastructure would be a good start.”

—John P., Facebook

“Open it and make $$$$millions a year. Do it for education, we certainly need that.”

—Vince D., Facebook
