UK Sends Highly Active Nuclear Waste Back to Switzerland via Mining Awareness

Switzerland recently shipped old Swiss Made plutonium to the US to be diluted in South Carolina and buried in the still collapsing WIPP (New Mexico). It also sent some Swiss HEU waste to be buried in the US.

The UK, on the other hand, is getting shot of some high level Swiss nuclear waste. While this is important from the point of view of justice and so that Switzerland learns that producing nuclear waste has consequences for which they must take responsibility, the conditions of an earlier shipment, shown below, do not appear safe.

This is a 2011 shipment in Basel, which sits near the French, German and Swiss border. Does this look secure? Clearly not! Switzerland needs to stop sending nuclear waste to Sellafield. And, needs to stop making it! Switzerland could probably easily go renewable if they would simply stop overheating buildings.

Later this year the UK will be returning highly active waste (HAW) in the form of vitrified residues to Switzerland.

This will be the second of the two planned consignments for Switzerland. The waste results from the reprocessing and recycling of spent nuclear fuel at the Sellafield site in West Cumbria, which had previously been used to produce electricity by utilities in Switzerland.

The Vitrified Residue Returns (VRR) programme is a key component of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) strategy to repatriate highly active waste from the UK, fulfil overseas contracts and deliver UK Government policy. These returns involve Sellafield Ltd working in partnership with International Nuclear Services (INS) to remove the waste from the Sellafield site.
