Hungary’s left-wing opposition parties organised a rally on Sunday in protest at a government deal with Russia to expand the country’s only nuclear power plant.

Many Hungarians are angry because the agreement which provides for two new reactors at the existing plant in the city of Paks was made without consulting the people.

“It is important what is happening with Paks. And it is important whether we want nuclear energy or not. And this is everybody’s business so we have to decide it together,” said one woman taking part in the protest.

“A huge agreement like this is about money and means such a big dept to the country cannot signed in secret without asking the Hungarian people,” said another protester.

Many of those protesting are not against nuclear power per se but are reluctant to become energy dependent on Russia.
