Regarding the editorial “Japan’s illiberal secrecy law” (Oct. 29): The well-reasoned denunciation of Japan’s new clampdown on free speech omits its most probable cause: The Fukushima disaster.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company is beginning the delicate and demanding task of removing 1,331 hot fuel rods from the damaged pool at Unit Four. Three melted cores are still missing and radiation is pouring into the air and water.
But in the midst of all this, a very pro-nuclear prime minister, Shinzo Abe, has found the time to sign a nuclear agreement with Turkey, and to push for the restart of as many of Japan’s 50 shut down reactors as he can. With the Olympics coming soon, his administration is in no mood for bad news from Fukushima.
