Radiation simulation had errors / Data wrongly entered for 6 N-plants on NRA’s meltdown scenario map via Daily Yomiuri Online

A number of errors were found in the Nuclear Regulation Authority’s simulation of how highly radioactive substances would disperse from 16 nuclear power plants in the event of a nuclear accident.

After correcting data for six nuclear power plants, the NRA revised the areas where accumulated radiation could reach 100 millisieverts in seven days in a worst-case scenario in which all reactors at the plants melted down.

At a press conference Tuesday, the NRA’s secretariat said it will launch a full investigation to study why the errors were made, and implement measures to prevent similar mistakes from recurring.

The results of the investigation and the measures will be presented to NRA Chairman Shunichi Tanaka within two weeks, the secretariat said.

Hideka Morimoto, deputy secretary general of the secretariat, apologized at the press conference, saying, “Our checking system was inadequate.”
