CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo. • Ameren Missouri said the alert activated at its nuclear plant in Callaway County on Sunday was a low-level alert triggered  by a freon leak.

The alert was declared at 10:56 a.m. and ended at 5:37 p.m. Sunday. There was “no release of radioactivity to the environment above normal operating limits,” Ameren said in a statement.

“The alert did not impact plant personnel safety or pose a hazard to the public,” Ameren said.

On Monday morning, Rita Holmes-Bobo, an Ameren spokeswoman, said that freon had leaked in one of two rooms containing air conditioning equipment that cools the control room.

The other air conditioner kept working. Repairs are planned for the one that was leaking.
