IAEA raps regulators for underestimating tsunami threat via The Japan Times

An International Atomic Energy Agency report on the Fukushima nuclear emergency says Japanese regulators underestimated the tsunami threat to coastal atomic plants.

Estimates of the maximum magnitude of potential earthquakes at the Fukushima No. 1 plant were based only on recent historical seismological data, according to the report released Monday. Instead, regulators should have taken into account evidence from prehistory going “as far back in time as possible,” as outlined in IAEA safety standards, it says.
