“Kenzaburo Oe: Japan ‘Burned by the Nuclear Fire’” via the Wall Street Journal

On a day marked by silent commemoration at 2:46 p.m. of the first-week anniversary of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, many who have lived through the events in Japan may be wondering whether things can ever be the same again.

But in a scathing rebuke over the country’s use of nuclear power, Kenzaburo Oe has already made up his mind. After the earthquake and tsunami, and in particular, the ever-grinding threat from the troubled Fukushima nuclear complex, the Nobel Prize-winning author sketched a link back to the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in an interview with Le Monde Thursday (in French): “Japan has entered a new phase, but once again we are under the gaze of nuclear victims, those men and women who displayed great courage in their suffering.”
