Yamaguchi Gov. Asks To Put Kaminoseki Nuclear Power Plant Construction On Hold
3:31 p.m., March 14, 2011 (Japan time)

On March 13, Governor of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Sekinari Nii, officially asked the Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. to stop the ongoing preparatory work for the planned construction of Kaminoseki Nuclear Power Plant (Kaminoseki, Yamaguchi Pref.) in response to the accidents at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant that had taken place as a result of the Tohoku earthquake. The Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. replied, “we will take your request seriously,” according to Governor Nii.

The Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. requested approval for setting up a nuclear reactor for Kaminoseki Nuclear Power Plant in December 2009. The construction is expected to launch in June 2012. At the moment the company is doing preparatory work such as reclamation of the waterfront.

Commenting on safety of nuclear power, Gov. Nii said, “we need to investigate safety of nuclear power. The level of anxiety among citizens of Yamaguchi Prefecture has risen due to the current circumstances we’re in now.”

  1. Tomomi Yamaguchi says

I am at least relieved to hear the news that they stopped the construction of the plant, at least for now. I truly hope that Chugoku Electric Power, the City of Kaminoseki and Yamaguchi prefecture seriously reconsider the plan to build the power plant there, with some serious discussion with and among the citizens.
