The New Media Workshop

Bruce Jenkins, Dean of Undergraduate Students at the Art Institute of Chicago, and former Cavell Curator of the Harvard Film Archive.

 

Professor Jenkins will discuss the works of Hollis Frampton in relationship to digital culture.

Please join the New Media Workshop for a discussion of some works by the French philosopher Jacques Rancière, led by  

Michelle Menzies, Ph.D. Student in the Department of English Language & Literature.

For this meeting we will be reading the following texts:

Jacques Rancière, “Distribution of the Sensible,” in The Politics of Aesthetics (London: Continuum, 2006): 9-45;

Jacques Rancière, The Future of the Image, (London: Verso, 2007): 1-31. 

Optional: Excerpts from Artforum (March, 2007), featuring an interview with Jacques Rancière.

Readings for the New Media Workshop’s discussion of Beowulf, the IMAX 3D Experience.

For our discussion, please familiarize yourself with the Production Notes  on the official Beowulf website. (Particularly pages 6-24).
 
In keeping with the workshop’s goal to consider the innovation and obsolescence of all media historically, please familiarize yourself with a short essay by Rudolf Arnheim, “The Complete Film” (1933).

The New Media Workshop in conjunction with the American Cultures Workshop, present:

LYNN SPIGEL, PROFESSOR AND CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF RADIO, TELEVISION AND FILM AT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY.

Professor Spigel will be discussing her paper “Warhol TV: Everyday Television for Subaltern Publics,” a chapter from her forthcoming publication TV by Design: Modern art and the rise of network television, (University of Chicago Press, November 2008).
