Marking the 150th anniversary of Alexis de Tocqueville’s death, this two-day, two-university event will bring together French and American scholars to address aspects of Tocqueville’s legacy that have become particularly contentious in recent years. These include Tocqueville’s intellectual and political engagement with empire, his account of aristocracy and of the American frontier, the psychology of greatness informing his analysis, and his self-understanding as an author writing in a democratic age. Exploring the limits of democracy as Tocqueville envisioned them, and the limits of his vision of democracy, the conference aims to launch a spirited interdisciplinary inquiry into the institutional, cultural, and psychic preconditions of democratic life.
