We are delighted to announce the release of the language-learning website Intermediate Urdu at http://urdu.wustl.edu/

Hosted by Washington University in St. Louis and developed with a grant from the South Asia Language Resource Center at the University of Chicago, Intermediate Urdu comprises sixteen interactive reading passages with corresponding audio and English summaries, dynamic online quizzes, and thirteen video interviews of Urdu scholars. All content is directed towards students at the intermediate level and preparing them for advanced level proficiency.

The site is the first to fully utilize Nastaliq as a web-based font so that Nastaliq is natively displayed in the site without requiring the user to download an appropriate font.

For the site’s font functionality to work properly across all operating systems, users are required to use the most recent version of the Firefox browser (4.-).

Hosted by Cornell University’s Language Resource Centre, and developed with a grant from the South Asia Language Resource Center at the University of Chicago, the course comprises 16 lessons with dialogues, associated audio and video content, an interactive bilingual glossary (with audio pronunciation clips) and additional supplementary materials.

The core content of this beginner’s course draws on the instructional material devised by Shambhu and Banu Oja at Cornell University, used for teaching over the last 25 years.

No registration is required to use the site. However, we are currently assessing the usage and efficacy of this online resource and are eager to find volunteers who may help. The Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a Visiting Faculty or Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in Sanskrit Literature for the 2011-2012 academic year. Applicants with a Ph. D. in a relevant field are encouraged to apply; ABDs nearing completion will also be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a year-long reading course in advanced Sanskrit, and two undergraduate courses in premodern South Asian culture. Expertise in the Sanskrit language is required, and teaching experience in premodern South Asian literature is desirable. The term of appointment will be July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.

The University of British Columbia is accepting applications for one renewable 12-month lecturer position in Hindi-Urdu & Sanskrit languages, commencing July 1, 2011. The successful applicant will be asked to teach 24 credits (4 year-long courses) of Hindi and Sanskrit language courses at all levels. Depending on the applicant’s area of expertise, the 24 credit teaching load might include undergraduate lecture courses on South Asian culture, religion, literature or film.

AISLS has funds from the US Department of Education to support US-based scholars who wish to acquire or improve language skills.  Limited funds are available to defray the costs of language instruction in Sinhala, Tamil, Pali or Arabic.  The instruction must take place in Sri Lanka and be obtained by September 30, 2011.  This program cannot cover translation costs, but it can cover instruction that takes the form of working with a tutor to translate texts or other materials.  The AISLS Colombo center will supply recipients with advice about language programs and tutors.

Normally, these awards will not be given to individuals who are in Sri Lanka with the support of a non-AISLS research award that provides expenses that can be used for language instruction.

Applicants should also fall into one of the following categories: 1) individual members of the AISLS resident in the US who hold a Ph.D. or equivalent qualification, 2) individual members of the AISLS who are undertaking language instruction to support the needs of graduate study at a US university, 3) faculty members at AISLS member institutions, or 4) graduate students at AISLS member institutions who are undertaking language instruction to support the needs of their program of study.  Previous recipients of AISLS language instruction awards are eligible.
