The workshop will be aimed at giving interested students and members of the university community (with little or no previous knowledge of Indian music) a short introduction to Hindustani music through the violin. Topics of interest may include raga, ornamentation, technique, style, and musical roles. Please bring your own instruments to the master class.

Vidya Dengle is a performing musician, painter, sculptor, and published author of short stories for children.  She studied violin in the Hindustani classical tradition with the late Ustad Zahoor Ahmed Khan of the Delhi Gharana and with Dr. Ashok Ranade in Mumbai.  Familiar with American audiences, she has  twice before conducted tours of American colleges and universities.  She resides in Pune, Maharashtra.

Manpreet Bedi, tabla artist
Manpreet Bedi is a disciple of Taal Yogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar and Pandit Ramdas Palsule. He began learning tabla at the early age of six and continues the journey of education.  Manpreet has accompanied many great artists such as L. K. Pandit, Pandit Nagaraj Rao havaldar, Vikas Kashalkar, Kumar Mardur, Pandit Brij Narayan (sarod), Milind Tulankar (jaltarang), Surmani Anupama Bhagwat (sitar), Sunil Avchat (bansuri), and Vikas Gupta (sitar).  He works on collaborative music projects with Illinois State University professor and double bassist Bill Koehler, Illinois Wesleyan University professor of piano and composition David Vayo, Murray State director of percussion John Hill, and other jazz musicians inspired by various musical influences.  His group is called Sonic Exploration Society (SES) and has released two CDs (Vandana—A Journey Together in 2004 and Syzygy in 2011).
