Central Javanese Gamelan Open House 2011

The UofC Central Javanese Gamelan Ensemble and Friends of the Gamelan are hosting an open house for anyone interested in learning more about the ensemble and performing. The open house will be Tuesday, October 11, from 7-9 p.m. All are welcome to attend for a brief performance, demonstration, and chat about the ensemble. The group meets at Hyde Park Union Church, on the southwest corner of Woodlawn and 56th. Please ring the buzzer for “Fireplace Room” at the 56th St. door to gain entrance to the building.

The six-week beginner class begins on October 18, and will take place weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6-7:15 p.m. It will be co-taught by Andrew Mall and community ensemble member Doug Hudson. No prior familiarity with Javanese gamelan performance technique or notation (or those of any other musical tradition) is presumed or required. Beginning class students will also participate in a special workshop with Guest Artistic Director Joko Sutrisno on the morning of Saturday, November 12. This class is recommended for anyone who wants an introduction to Javanese gamelan, whether or not they intend to continue performing with the ensemble throughout the year. All who take the beginning class will be eligible to join the performance ensemble in December.

Interested participants with prior experience in Javanese gamelan are welcome to join the performance ensemble without taking the beginning class. No auditions are required.

The beginning gamelan class is free for all participants. For University of Chicago students, faculty, staff, and affiliates, there is no charge for participation in the performance ensemble. A full year of participation in gamelan may satisfy an ensemble participation requirement (for undergrad music majors) or a practicum component (for graduate students). Please consult with the DUS or DGS for specifics.

Anyone interested in either the beginning class or joining the ensemble who cannot attend the open house should contact Andrew Mall at mall@uchicago.edu.
