Linguistic expert taught value of storytelling

Joseph M. Williams taught writing at the University of Chicago with a scientific approach that emphasized the importance of storytelling, even in medical texts and legal briefs.
Dr. Williams, 74, died of heart failure Friday, Feb. 22, in his home in South Haven, Mich., said his daughter, Megan Beckert. His primary home was in Hyde Park.
A professor at U. of C. from 1965 to 1999, Dr. Williams was a linguist who wrote a history of the English language from the evolution of man to the present, “The Origins of the English Language.”
