Heartland Opening Reception
Celebrate the opening of Heartland! Join co-curator Charles Esche and exhibiting artists Sarah Kanouse, Kerry James Marshall, and Marjetica Potrč for a debate about the benefits and limitations of thinking about contemporary art in relation to geographic regions. The evening also features an in-gallery performances by Jeremiah Day and members of Whoop Dee Doo.
The panel discussion begins at 5:30 pm and takes place across the courtyard from the Smart Museum in the Cochrane-Woods Art Center, room 157. Jeremiah Day performs in the Smart Museum’s galleries at 7 pm and Whoop Dee Doo at 7:30 PM.

Whoop Dee Doo!
Experimental Station, 6100 S. Blackstone Avenue
Kansas City’s Whoop Dee Doo teams up with local talent to present the Chicago premiere of its kid-friendly faux public access television show featuring live music, art, and variety acts. Costumes and audience participation is encouraged—put on your dancing shoes, drop in, and join the extravaganza!

BOY Screening with SSION’s Cody Critcheloe
Chopin Theatre, 1534 W. Division Street
One night only! Heartland heads to Wicker Park for a screening of BOY, a new feature film written and directed by Cody Critcheloe, artist and lead signer of the band SSION. The semi-autobiographical BOY employs SSION’s signature camp, glitter, and punk high jinks to create a musical narrative that Critcheloe calls “a gay-punk Forrest Gump.”
BOY is also shown as a looped video installation in Heartland at the Smart Museum.

About the exhibition
Throughout the vast interior of the United States, contemporary artists are responding to the world around them and reshaping it in unexpected ways. Organized by the Smart Museum of Art and the Van Abbemuseum, one of Europe’s premier contemporary art institutions, this exhibitionoffers an idiosyncratic look at the innovative forms of artistic creation taking place in the American Heartland.

Artists include Carnal Torpor, Compass Group, Cody Critcheloe, Jeremiah Day, Detroit Tree of Heaven Woodshop, Design 99, Scott Hocking, Kerry James Marshall, Greely Myatt, Marjetica Potrč, Julika Rudelius, Artur Silva, Deb Sokolow, and Whoop Dee Doo.
