Hoeckner, Berthold

Under the auspices of an extended Mellon New Directions Grant I have been busy running several ongoing and new empirical studies this year, one on analog-acoustic expression in speech and music, a study on what I call the Casablanca effect (music serving as a cue for images), and a study on the motion-after effect as induced by sound (as I write this we are completing scans of thirty subjects at the University of Chicago’s Brain Imaging Research Center).  Stay tuned on results.   Earlier this summer appeared a special film issue which I edited for Nineteenth-Century Music.  With most of the empirical projects coming to completion (and several administrative jobs ending their multi-year terms) in 2012, I am looking forward to returning to my book on film music and memory.
