Competition Level: Approximately 50 fellowships are awarded annually; the number of applications submitted is not available

Eligibility: No particular requirement

Bogliasco Fellows are in residence at the Luguria Center near Genoa, Italy for one month or, in some cases, a half semester. In special circumstances, residencies of other lengths may be approved. They are provided with living quarters (bedroom with private bath), a separate private studio, and full board. These fellowships are awarded to qualified persons doing creative work or scholarly research in the following disciplines: archaeology, architecture, classics, dance, film/video, history, landscape architecture, literature, music, philosophy, theater, and visual arts. A project is presumed to lead to the completion of an artistic, literary, or scholarly work, followed by publication, performance, exhibition, or other public presentation.

The fellowships are scheduled during the two semesters of the traditional academic year, spring-winter and winter-spring. A stipend is not provided; travel costs are assumed by the fellow.

The Luguria Study Center for the Arts and the Humanities also offers the following special fellowships. All persons who are awarded Bogliasco Fellowships are automatically eligible for Special Fellowship status. No additional materials are required.

Aaron Copland Bogliasco Fellowship in Music

John Burroughs Bogliasco Fellowship in Literature
Established by George Capen Bitting, this Special Fellowship is named in honor of the American naturalist and essayist who was active in the evolution of the U.S. conservation movement. Along with Henry David Thoreau, John Burroughs was an important practitioner of the American literary genre, the nature essay. This Special Fellowship is awarded, without restriction on nationality, to persons working in creative writing. In addition to reimbursing travel expenses to and from Genoa, this Fellowship provides a cash stipend.

Leo Biaggi de Blasys Bogliasco Fellowship

Recent Chicago Fellows: Dario Maestripieri, Biology (07/08); Robert Bird, Slavic (06/07)

Competition Level: 12 scholars and scientists are in residence at any one time; the number of applications submitted is not available

Eligibility: Former residents must wait 10 years before reapplying; third residencies are not offered.

The Center, near Lake Como, Italy, typically offers one-month residencies for no more than twelve scholars and scientists at a time. Individuals in any discipline are welcome to apply. Space is reserved for academic projects as well as projects that align with the Foundation’s mission to expand opportunities for poor or vulnerable people and to help ensure that globalization’s benefits are shared more widely.

A Bellagio residency provides time for critical thinking, disciplined work, individual reflection, and collegial engagement, uninterrupted by the usual professional and personal demands. Residency cohorts include artists, writers, NGO practitioners, policymakers, scholars, and scientists from around the world. Meals and informal presentations of work provide an opportunity for residents to engage with one another. During special dinners, residents also have the chance to interact with the participants of international conferences that are hosted in various buildings on the Center’s property. The combination of private time for work and reflection and informal gatherings is an important part of life at the Center.

Residencies are typically four-weeks in length, however, shorter or longer periods may be available. Applicants need to submit a statement describing why an alternate length of time is requested. Spouses/life partners may accompany the resident, or may apply for a concurrent residency. Room and board are provided. Residents must pay for their own airfare and local transportation. Travel assistance is awarded in a separate process after one has been invited to Bellagio. The Center also offers collaborative residencies for two to four persons working on the same project.
