Eligibility: Applicants must have received a PhD or equivalent within ten years of the application deadline; preference is given to untenured junior faculty; if a prior Hunt Fellowship was received, all requirements of that fellowship must be completed. There is no citizenship requirement.

Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowships support the writing-up of completed research. The fellowship is awarded to scholars in the earlier stages of their careers, when they frequently lack the time and resources to develop their research for publication. The fellowships support research that demonstrates a clear link to anthropological theory and debates and promises to make a solid contribution to advancing these ideas. There is no preference for any methodology, research location, or subfield.

A maximum of $40,000 is available. Applicants requesting shorter time periods would receive a pro-rated award as appropriate (e.g., a six-month project would be awarded $20,000).

Successful candidates are given the option of postponing receipt of their fellowship so as to make the competition accessible to those whose personal plans do not line up exactly with the year in which awards are offered in their fields. While the Foundation plans to follow this sequence of fields, additional changes may from time to time need to be made as warranted by the limited resources of the Foundation.

Often characterized as midcareer awards, Guggenheim Fellowships are intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.

It provides support for research leave for midcareer scholars in all fields (natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, creative arts) except the performing arts. In 2008, it awarded 190 fellowships at an average amount of $43,200. (2009 information is not available.)

The Foundation understands the performing arts to be those in which an individual interprets work created by others.
