Saturday, April 13th: Off the Record – A Listening Party with Kelan Phil Cohranat the Washington Park Arts Incubator The Washington Park Arts Incubator continues its series of “listening parties.” The premise is simple; a Chicago musician (or any musician that’s just passing through) comes to Washington Park to play some of his or her recorded music, jam out with some live music interludes, and answer some audience questions. Kelan Phil Cohran was born in Oxford Mississippi, 1927 and at the age of 85, he’s still got it. His style ranges from elegant and graceful to raucous and wild. This jazz trumpeter has played with Sun Ra’s Arkestra and is the co-founder of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). Not an event to be easily missed, this is your chance to hang out and jam one of Chicago’s music royalty.

Cruzar la Cara de la Luna at Benito Juárez Community Academy

The world’s first (and likely best) Mariachi Opera travels to Pilsen with a theatrical experience that has stunned audiences from Paris to Houston with its uncommon sound and emotional poignancy. “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna” or, “To Cross the Face of the Moon,” is not your typical operatic tale of life, death, and all-around tragedy. It is a timeless story of family. Thisbilingual musical journey that follows three generations of theVelásquez family, split across the boundaries of nation and culture. Presented by the Lyric Opera in cooperation with the National Museum of Mexican Art, “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna” combines the raucous energy of Mariachi with the passionate vigor of opera. It’s a combination that has proven hot-only a small number of tickets will be available at the venue the day of.Benito Juárez Community Academy, 1450-1510 W. Cermak Rd.
De Cierta Manera at the Dorchester Projects/Black Cinema House

The Black Cinema House at the Dorchester Projects is screening “De Cierta Manera,” or “One Way or Another.” A film produced in the year 1974, it is the first Cuban feature film directed by a woman, Sara Gómez. The film is essentially a love story; a teacher and a factory worker struggle to make it work, as they remain tied to difficult responsibilities and social roles in post-Revolutionary Cuba. A mixture of documentary-style footage with fictional story, Sara Gómez takes an in-depth look at the poor neighborhoods of Havana. “De Cierta Manera”addresses social conflict head on, while maintaining a balance with the film’s core of narrative and emotion.

Black Cinema House, 6901 S. Dorchester Ave. Sunday, April 28, 7pm. Free. Seating is limited, RSVPblackcinemahouse@rebuild-foundation.org.blackcinemahouse.org
