Hi All--A special thanks to all the Odyssey students and faculty for their crucial contributions to The Humanities in Difficult Circumstances! It was a very important day! I also wanted to go on record as saying that I certainly intend to continue my efforts to bring my philosophical colleague Ismat and the others here, if that should ever prove to be possible. The disrespect and harassment that they received at the hands of the Embassy can only be deplored. But I console myself with the thought that we did something to make their voices heard, and that the intense conversation that we had on Sat. was very effective in raising awareness about the many dimensions of the tragedy in Darfur/Sudan. I believe that the exchange between Mabouc Mabouc and Abdelbagi Jibril was particularly illuminating for many of us, given the way it brought out the long history of the genocide and the many problems involved in any future reconciliation. Indeed, we were very honored to have had so many of the "Lost Boys" in attendance, and their various testimonies were singularly moving, as were the contributions by people who had survived the genocide in Rwanda. I do not believe that I have ever been more deeply moved by a UChicago conference, and this after over thirty years of experience with them. And what you just witnessed, on the spot, was the birth of a new series of Clemente courses in Darfur and southern Sudan--quite a result for any conference. Best, Bart

This was a most excellent conference. The information shared, the plight, the triumphs and the resiliency, all stories of great resolve and courage. Thank you for the opportunity to attend such an illuminating event. I look forward to more. Certainly the Humanities will continue to bridge gaps and facilitate healing.
