Dr. J. Stephen Downie is an Associate Professor at the Graduate School
of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is Director International Music Information
Retrieval Systems Evaluation Laboratory (IMIRSEL). Professor Downie is
Principal Investigator on the Networked Environment for Music Analysis
(NEMA) and the Music-to-Knowledge (M2K) music data-mining
projects. He has been very active in the establishment of the Music
Information Retrieval and Music Digital Library communities through his
ongoing work with the ISMIR series of MIR conferences as a member of the
ISMIR steering committee.

I am a computational linguist, interested in text analysis from a variety of perspectives — experimental, theoretical, computational, applied. I am particularly interested in viewed text as a collaborative enterprise between the author and the reader, and what this entails in terms of author and reader strategies. I am currently working on political rhetoric from this perspective.

I’m interested in working with people developing and implementing the best tools and approaches for supporting digital humanities for research, collaboration and teaching. I have particular interest in networked tools for collaboration and communication. The faculty, students and other scholars associated with our Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities at Case Western Reserve University are using some digital tools and resources, and would like to engage with the burgeoning national digital humanities community.

My art practice is comprised of 3 parts, installation, performance and hospitality. In each of those areas, I use a combination of very low technology outputs combined with live performance. I hope to use sound and video much more extensively and very open to collaborations with technicians interested in outputs for their scientific or technological research. Sound and video manipulation and installation, interactivity and GIS all play substantial roles in my creative processes.

As the Demonstrator Project Manager for the Bamboo Planning Process, I’m interested in the breadth and depth of digital humanities, with a particular focus on areas where improved coordination, infrastructure, and shareable resources have the potential to better enable research for arts & humanities scholars. I am also the director of Scholarly Technology and Research Computing, part of the central IT group at the University of Chicago.

John Tolva is the Senior Program Manager for Cultural Strategy and Programs for Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs at the Center for IBM Solution Innovation in Chicago. This position combines a knowledge of culture and the humanities with an understanding of IBM’s newest technologies and related business unit needs, markets and objectives.

John holds a Masters in Information Design and Technology from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in English Literature from Washington University. Mr. Tolva is on the editorial board of the ACM Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage. He maintains a personal website at www.ascentstage.com.
