Sofia Gubaidulina:
Garden of Joy and Sorrow
Perception
In Croce
This all-Sofia Gubaidulina program combines the talents of Grammy-winning new music ensembles eighth blackbird and Pacifica Quartet in a special event commemorating the composer’s 80th birthday. The program includes two of her most significant chamber music works- Garden of Joy and Sorrow and In Croce. The evening closes with her monumental cantata, Perception, which reflects her fascination with ancient mathematical principles of proportion.
“…The [University of Chicago] has never before given [an honorary degree] to a composer, and it’s hard to think of an artist more deserving of the gesture.” – Alex Ross, The Rest is Noise
This event is a part of the Soviet Arts Experience.
