A message from our friends in the Center for the Study of Languages:
CSL Funds for Professional Development for Summer 2011 and Autumn 2011

Funding will again be available to support professional development for faculty or graduate student language instructors who would like to pursue training in language teaching, assessment, and/or technology over the summer or in the fall. In some instances, it may also be possible to support conference travel related to language pedagogy. These funds are available from the general CSL budget for the support of our language faculty at the university.
At present, we would like to solicit proposals from those of you who would like to take advantage of Summer 2011 or Autumn 2011 programs, i.e., any programs, conferences, workshops, or other events through the end of the calendar year 2011. If you would like to apply, please send a cover letter describing your professional, linguistic, and scholarly interests and how the proposed program or travel fits in with your overall academic plans or career goals to <languages@uchicago.edu>. Please provide a description of the program and a proposed budget.
Applications should be turned in no later than Friday, May 6, 2011. Proposals will be considered by the Advisory Council to the CSL and awards will be announced by the end of May.
For advance planning, we will also do another announcement in the fall for Winter and Spring 2012 professional development.
For those of you looking for sample programs, here are some suggestions from previous summers:
ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview training (4-day workshops)
CARLA (Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition)
CLEAR (Center for Language Education and Research)
CALPER (Center for Advanced Language Proficiency and Research)
NCLRC (National Capital Language Resource Center)
SALRC (The South Asia Language Resource Center) also has a nice selection of links for programs:
Please let the CSL know if you have any questions. We hope many of you will have ideas for taking advantage of this opportunity for professional development.
All the best,
Steven Clancy
