Instructor Position in the UChicago Humanities Core

The Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for one or more one-year teaching appointments at the rank of Instructor to teach in the Humanities Core to begin on September 1, 2012. Responsibilities include teaching six courses per year – two courses per quarter. Classes are based on intensive discussion of fundamental issues and texts, with an emphasis on critical analysis and written argument. The position requires a completed Ph.D. in a relevant humanities discipline and evidence of teaching excellence. The salary is $48,000 plus applicable University benefits.

Position Summary

The Teachers for Global Classrooms program, a program of the Department of State and administered by IREX, strives to build capacity for globalizing U.S. classrooms and core curriculum by providing American secondary educators with intensive training in skills, techniques, and methodologies that would facilitate this process. The online professional development course objectives include, but are not limited to:

·Defining and analyzing the term global education for secondary education;
·Identifying and characterizing global competencies and best practices in secondary education;
·Adapting and integrating global competencies into core curriculum and standards;
·Reflecting on professional application and practice;

Visiting Lecturer, Dept of Slavic Languages, UIUC

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign invites applications for a Visiting Lecturer/Visiting Instructor, with a target start date of August 16, 2012. Title will depend on level of education; Lecturer must have a PhD, Instructor must have an MA.

This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track position, renewable for up to three years contingent on funding and strong performance reviews.

Salary competitive and commensurate with experience.

The successful applicant will teach advanced Russian language courses; courses for undergraduates and graduates in language pedagogy and Slavic linguistics (e.g., structure of Russian); and, depending on qualifications and departmental needs, intermediate-advanced language courses in one other Slavic language courses in one other Slavic Language (e.g., Polish) as well. Teaching assignment: 3/2 course load. Position also entails supervising the department’s language program, which includes the following duties: select and order course materials for Russian, and oversee that process for other languages offered by the department; oversee preparation of course syllabi and tests; coordinate, supervise and train graduate teaching assistants and instructors in the language program in Slavic; manage and market enrollment; coordinate placement testing in Slavic; serve as department contact for Russian language study abroad; represent the Slavic language program at appropriate venues.

Master’s degree required; PhD preferred. Required: native or near native command of Russian and English; proficiency in a second Slavic language preferred. Preference will be given to degrees in Slavic linguistics, general linguistics, second language acquisition, or related field. Experience with instructional technology in language teaching, evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, including Russian language instruction, required; experience in program direction/supervision preferred.

Position Description

The School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for Director of its Foreign Language Teacher Education Program, with a target start date of August 16, 2012.

Responsibilities

1. Provide leadership for the Foreign Language Teacher Education (FLTE) program, including budgetary oversight. Coordinate staffing and delivery of the professional education course sequence, early field placement, and student teaching. The Director’s teaching load is one course each semester.

2. Coordinate clinical experiences placement. Provide information to student candidates on current program requirements. Assure that candidates are placed in diverse clinical settings. Monitor and assess candidates. Supervise the university clinical experiences supervisors. Coordinate efforts of cooperative personnel and clinical sites.

3. Work collaboratively with departments and college units to ensure that all professional, state, and institutional standards are met and assessed. Monitor program curricula. Assist in the development of criteria for admission and retention of students.

4. Coordinate efforts to assure compliance with Illinois State Board of Education standards through cooperation with the Council on Teacher Education, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
