2012 Fulbright-Hays DDRA Competition Announced

Good News! Contrary to expectation a Fulbright-Hays DDRA competition will be held this year. Please see the below message from Brooke Noonan, the UChicago Graduate Student Affairs Director, for more info. *Information about setting up GSA appointments only pertains to UChicago grad students*

URGENT UPDATE: Fulbright-Hays DDRA due June 1, 2012

Dear Colleagues—
Less than 3 hours ago, the U.S. Department of Education announced that the 2012-13 Fulbright-Hays DDRA (Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad) Fellowship competition is open! This is exciting news—especially after the cancellation of last year’s competition due to federal budget cuts—but means that our students will have to put together their applications in record speed with a strict internal deadline of Friday, JUNE 1, 4:30 p.m. CST.

GSA will not be able to arrange individual advising appointments. Instead, we will hold emergency Fulbright-Hays DDRA Information Sessions as follows. All prospective applicants should make arrangements to attend one of these sessions:
· WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 1:00-2:30 p.m. in CLASSICS 110
· WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, 12:00-1:30 p.m. in REYNOLDS CLUB (repeat of session above)

Students’ ability to submit their applications by the deadline will depend on the cooperation of faculty and staff on whom students must rely to submit letters of recommendation and foreign language evaluations by the internal deadline of JUNE 1. NOTE: the posted deadline of June 14, 2012 refers to the institutional “drop deadline” by which all students’ applications must be vetted and approved internally before being submitted—a process which is time-consuming due to tedious coordination of several offices.

I appreciate your help in spreading this update widely and promptly. As you know, for the last 2 decades, UChicago ranks #1 in the nation for most Fulbright-Hays recipients. These funds have not only provided millions of dollars in UChicago divisional budget relief but also allowed our students to conduct internationally impactful dissertation research. Check GSA’s website for updates http://grad-affairs.uchicago.edu/programs/fulbright.shtml.

Best,
Brooke
