HOST FAMILIES SOUGHT FOR

LEGISLATIVE FELLOWS

FROM UKRAINE, RUSSIA & GEORGIA

March 11, 2011

To:  Persons Interested in Ukraine, Georgia, and/or Russia

I am writing to explore whether you might be able to help identify potential host families (or individuals) for members of a group of Legislative Fellows scheduled to arrive in the United States in early April from Ukraine, Russia, and Georgia.

In collaboration with the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the American Councils for International Education (ACTR/ACCELS) is placing 33 Legislative Fellows from Ukraine, Russia, and Georgia in government themed mini-fellowships across the country fromApril 2 – April 30.

The Legislative Fellows will be traveling to the United States as part of the federally-funded Legislative Fellows Program (LFP). Initiated in 2005, under the auspices of the Legislative Education and Practice program, the LFP affords talented and promising young professionals from the three aforementioned countries the opportunity to gain practical experience in, and exposure to, the United States government and the American political process.

LFP Fellows are competitively-selected public servants between 25 and 35 years of age drawn from diverse backgrounds. They are college educated (many have advanced degrees in law or international studies), have solid professional qualifications, and speak fluent English as demonstrated by a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam.  They are eager to learn how Americans address a range of political issues so that they may better their own societies.

Work sites have already been identified for the incoming Legislative Fellows but now it necessary to identify host families and/or individuals in many of the cities to which the Fellows will be assigned.

Specifically, host families are needed for the following cities:

  • Orange County, CA – Georgian
  • San Francisco, CA – Ukrainian
  • Boulder, CO – Russian
  • Denver, CO - Georgian
  • Hartford, CT - Ukrainian
  • Washington, DC  - Ukrainian + Georgian
  • Smyrna, GA - Russian
  • Elwood, IL – Russian
  • Indianapolis, IN - Russian
  • Southfield, MI - Russian
  • Greensborough, NC – Russian
  • Albany, NY – Russian
  • Harrisburg, PA - Georgian
  • Philadelphia, PA - Russian
  • Arlington, VA - Georgian
  • Montpelier, VT – Georgian

American Councils has invited me to assist, in a consulting capacity, in identifying potential host families and/or individuals.  Accordingly, I am contacting you to explore whether you might be able to serve refer me to persons who might be interested. I have provided below some basic information about being a host family.
