CALL FOR PART-TIME BULGARIAN EDITOR & RESEARCH STAFF
posted for Chris Deliso (www.balkanalysis.com)
Following a lengthy reprogramming period which will soon be finished, the new version of the website I have directed since 2003 – www.balkanalysis.com – will be resuming publishing activities.
While much of the team is now in place, we are still interviewing candidates for certain countries, including Bulgaria. It is possible for me to personally interview select candidates in Bulgaria, probably at the end of April or beginning of May.
Here is some information about the duties involved and the qualifications required. All positions are paying, contract-based positions under the general umbrella of the website, which is US-based.
1.) Country Editor position (1): this high-visibility position is ideal for young candidates who wish to play a role in editing and writing short analytical pieces and conducting interviews with Bulgarian figures of note. The four topics generally covered by the website are: politics & diplomacy; security & defense; economy & business; culture & tourism. There will be a country-specific page on the website which will require basic routine maintenance by the editor. However, with only two unique articles expected per month, the work should not take a great deal of time and therefore can be balanced with the individual’s existing work or study obligations.
2.) Researcher position (multiple): this critical ‘background’ position involves various types of field research, interviews, data analysis and new media work. Writing opportunities are possible.
3.) Marketing/sales/promotion position (multiple): these are future planned positions for which there is not immediate need, however those with such interests are welcome to apply as well.
Benefits of the jobs: Besides collecting a regular fee for work done, the successful candidate will have ‘intangible’ yet significant rewards, such as engaging with influential persons, getting the opportunity to have your work seen on one of the foremost independent news sites covering the Balkans, undertaking a certain amount of travel, and of course, learning a professional trade.
Requirements: While candidates do not necessarily need to have a journalistic background, it is necessary to be able to think creatively and analytically, as well as to conduct interviews, and to have excellent spoken and written English (as well as Bulgarian). Knowledge of other languages is also a plus. Candidates must be objective, outgoing with a positive attitude, and capable of interacting professionally with a wide variety of people who may have strongly different ways of seeing the world. Candidates should be eager for a challenge, enjoy working hard, and capable of following deadlines. Computer skills are also necessary.
