Icon Writing Technique
The workshop is designed to practice first hand the ancient art of icon writing using egg tempera and gold leaf on a gesso board while working at your own pace. The medium, an egg yolk emulsion, is mixed with finely ground earth pigments like ochres and minerals like lapis lazuli and hematite and is applied in translucent and opaque paint layers. A background in art is not required for successful completion of an icon.

Icon Writing Theory
According to the Church Fathers, icon writing is theology in color. In addition to the practical aspects of icon
painting, the language of symbols and theology in icons as a liturgical art will be presented. The creation of an icon is a means of prayer and provides a contemplative experience to individuals of all faiths. Learning icon
writing in the tradition of the ancient masters gives one the experience of contemplating the image of God in man.

Instructor
Katherine de Shazer has been painting icons for over 10 years and has been teaching for over 25 years in varying disciplines. She continues the ancient tradition of icon painting and teaching of her master teacher, Vladislav
Andrejev, Master Iconograper and founder of the Prosopon School of Iconology (prosoponschool.org) in New York and Russia.
