Oyster Creek hosts 350 students

LACEY — Eleven-year-old Jarrett Hillman is not certain whether he wants to pursue a career in the nuclear power industry, but he did enjoy donning protective attire and touring part of the Oyster Creek plant.

“We learned how the systems make nuclear power and I think that is pretty cool,” he said.

Jarrett, a Beach Haven resident, was one of nine fifth-graders from Beach Haven Elementary School who attended Exelon Generation’s Energy Education Day held Monday at the Oyster Creek education training facility off Route 9.

School groups from Toms River High School North and East, Lacey Middle School and High School, Barnegat High School, and Ocean Gate Elementary School were among the 360 students who came out Monday to the facility for the educational program.

D’Ambrosio said there were a variety of scheduled presentations and activities designed to teach the students about energy, nuclear power operations and careers in science and technology.

“There are a lot of careers for people in the energy field and we wanted high school students especially to be aware of that,” she said.

Jarrett had an opportunity Monday to don a bright yellow protective suit that Josh Alfonso, an Exelon radiation protection technician, said had the nickname of “banana suit” during the program.
