Petition against removal of A-bomb victim figures delivered to Hiroshima museum via The Mainichi

HIROSHIMA — A local man delivered a petition on June 6 to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, protesting against the planned removal of figures depicting A-bomb victims.

The figures in question depict the horrors of the moments after the atomic bomb exploded in Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945. However, some bombing survivors have criticized the figures as inaccurate, and in a plan put together by the museum in July last year, it was written that “it would be desirable to remove or replace” the figures. The museum plans to place the focus of its exhibits on actual objects related to the bombing, rather than re-creations like the figures.

However, Tomiaki Nagahara, 66, a second-generation A-bomb victim and volunteer at the museum, stresses the role the figures play in passing on the horrors of the bombing. The day after the figures’ removal was decided upon, he spent the whole day in front of them, acting as an exhibit guide for almost 100 parent-child groups. Some of the children were surprised or frightened, but no matter their reaction, they all stopped at the exhibit. He says that when he advised them to “take a good look at the calamity,” they all listened to him intently.
