New nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point C is approved via BBC

Approval has been given for a new nuclear power station to be built in Somerset.

Energy Secretary Ed Davey told MPs in the Commons that he was granting planning consent for French energy giant EDF to construct Hinkley Point C.

The proposed £14bn power plant would be capable of powering five million homes.

The building of Hinkley Point C is expected to pave the way for a fleet of new nuclear plants across the UK.

Mr Davey said the disruption caused by the nuclear build would be outweighed by the benefits.

‘Rigorous examination’

He said it would help meet the government’s energy and policy objectives and was “of crucial national importance”.
