Funds eyed for U.S., Canada cleanup via The Japan Times

The Foreign Ministry will seek funds in an upcoming extra budget to help the United States and Canada dispose of tons of debris from the 2011 tsunami, officials said.

With a huge amount of debris expected to reach the U.S. and Canadian coasts starting this fall, the ministry is also considering launching a program for returning mementos and other precious items to their owners, the officials said.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced this month it was providing $250,000 in grants for cleaning up tsunami debris in Alaska, Washington state, Oregon, California and Hawaii. But experts believe more money is needed for the cleanup.

    Interesting that the article says nothing about whether any of this debris is radioactively contaminated.
