Brazil not to build new nuclear plant at least until 2021

Marcio Zimmermann, executive secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, was quoted as saying Brazil now expects that power demand for the coming years can be met by hydroelectric power generation.

The remarks apparently represent a policy switch under President Dilma Rousseff, after her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva planed to add some 50 reactors.

Brazil, which currently has two operating reactors, will continue to construct a third reactor scheduled to go online in 2015 or 2016.
