CHICAGO—
A small group of anti-nuclear activists gathered at the University of Chicago Sunday to reflect on the lasting impact of Japan’s nuclear disaster and the lessons learned.

The memorial was held in front of a statue that marks the site where the first nuclear reactor was built. The event wrapped up a weekend symposium that commemorated the one year anniversary of the earthquake, tsunami, and meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Even though there have been no deaths specifically linked to the plant, 100,000 people who lived in contaminated areas have been displaced. The long-term health hazards remain to be seen, and there are concerns over radiation levels in areas that have been deemed safe.
