Hibakusha: Swap reliance on atomic energy for renewables via The Japan Times Online

NEW YORK — Setsuko Thurlow, a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, spoke about the Fukushima nuclear disaster and questioned the world’s reliance on atomic energy at a meeting of the U.N. committee on disarmament and security in New York.

“(The Fukushima crisis) was a painful reminder to the world that within our lifetimes we once again witnessed people being exposed to radiation,” Thurlow said Wednesday, speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of the U.N. General Assembly’s First Committee on Disarmament and International Security.

“Has not the time come to consider replacing the pillar of the NPT that guarantees access to nuclear energy technology with a new guarantee for access to technological assistance for renewable energies?” she asked.
