Auditors call for large cut in nuke subsidies funds via The Japan Times Online

About ¥65.7 billion in funds set aside to subsidize municipalities slated to host new nuclear reactors can be slashed as all such construction projects have been frozen, government auditors said Wednesday.

The Board of Audit called on the industry ministry to stop accumulating excessive funds for reactor construction projects that are unlikely to proceed, saying, “Huge expenses will be needed to reconstruct areas damaged by the March disasters and to secure the safety of nuclear plants” in light of the Fukushima nuclear crisis.
