New ministry home eyed for nuke agency via The Japan Times Online

The government may separate the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and merge its functions into a new agency to be created under the Environment Ministry, according to a minister’s draft plan revealed Wednesday.

The proposal was drafted by Goshi Hosono, minister in charge of the Fukushima nuclear crisis, who plans to announce it soon to address criticism that the nuclear safety watchdog is presided over by METI, which promotes nuclear power.
