Some 800 workers have spent more than a month dealing with the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant, but they have only recently started to receive medical checkups, Tokyo Electric Power Co. officials said Saturday.
It took nearly two months after the crisis erupted following the March 11 quake and tsunami to start regular health checks after the health ministry – assuming the crisis would be over quickly – initially only required that they be performed once the crisis was over, the Tepco officials said.
Thirty of the workers have been exposed to more than 100 millisieverts of cumulative radiation. However, with the exception of three workers exposed March 25 to high-level radiation and those who have already ceased working at the plant, they received their first examinations only this month, the officials said.
