 山口県の二井関成知事は14日、中国電力が計画している上関原子力発電所(山口県上関町)の建設準備工事を当面見合わせるよう13日に中国電に要請したことを明らかにした。東日本巨大地震で被災した東京電力の福島第1原発(福島県)での事故発生を受けた措置。知事によると中国電は「申し出の趣旨を重く受け止める」と回答したという。

 中国電は2009年12月に国に上関原発の原子炉設置許可を申請。12年6月の着工予定で、海面埋め立てなどの準備工事に着手している。

 二井知事は原発の安全性全般について「検証する必要がある。県民の不安は今回の件で高まっている」と述べた。

On March 13, Governor of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Sekinari Nii, officially asked the Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. to stop the ongoing preparatory work for the planned construction of Kaminoseki Nuclear Power Plant (Kaminoseki, Yamaguchi Pref.) in response to the accidents at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant that had taken place as a result of the Tohoku earthquake. The Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. replied, “we will take your request seriously,” according to Governor Nii.

    I am at least relieved to hear the news that they stopped the construction of the plant, at least for now. I truly hope that Chugoku Electric Power, the City of Kaminoseki and Yamaguchi prefecture seriously reconsider the plan to build the power plant there, with some serious discussion with and among the citizens.
