About the Lecture Niall Atkinson explores the relationship between architecture and experience in the Italian Renaissance city. He has recently embarked on a collaborative project which allows researchers to combine historical data with historical maps, enabling users to explore Florence’s urban history in a virtual environment. Working with Peter Leonard, Associate Director of Humanities Computing, Atkinson experiments with digitally mapping the soundscape of Florence in the 13th to 16th centuries as a way of understanding how Florentines experienced the city as a multi-sensorial phenomenon. Together they have discovered new ways that digital technology can greatly enrich our understanding of the relationship between the production of works of art, architecture, and the communities that producedthem. |
